Why Shopify translations go missing
Shopify stores change constantly. New products are added, descriptions are edited, collections are reorganized, markets are launched, and theme text changes during normal store work. Every change can create a translation gap.
The most common cause is simple: the source language gets updated, but translated versions are not updated at the same time. Another common case is launching a new market or language before every content type has been reviewed.
Missing translations are not always obvious. A product page might look fine while its SEO title, metafield content, policy text, or navigation label is still missing in another language.
Fallback content can hide the problem
When a translated value is missing, shoppers may see fallback content from the default language. This can make the store look partially translated: the header is localized, but a product description, checkout label, policy, or SEO snippet appears in English.
Fallback content is useful because it prevents empty pages, but it also makes translation quality harder to audit by eye. A field can appear filled even when the translated version does not really exist.
Important: a page that looks complete in the storefront is not proof that every underlying Shopify translation field is complete.
Hidden places where translations are often missed
Most merchants check product titles and descriptions first. That is useful, but missing translations often hide in less obvious places:
- SEO titles and descriptions: important for search results, but easy to forget.
- Collection descriptions: especially when collections are used for campaigns or seasonal pages.
- Navigation labels: menu text can remain in the source language even when destination pages are translated.
- Policies: refund, shipping, privacy, and terms content must be checked carefully.
- Metafields: product specifications, ingredients, care instructions, badges, and custom fields.
- Metaobjects: reusable content blocks that may appear across many pages.
- Theme strings: buttons, labels, badges, empty states, and small interface text.
A practical workflow for finding missing translations
A good workflow starts with structure, not random page clicking.
- List all published languages and active markets.
- Check every resource type that can appear to shoppers.
- Separate missing values from blank, copied, and stale values.
- Prioritize issues that affect live markets first.
- Export or assign the fix list so translation work can be completed in batches.
- Run the same check again after product or theme updates.
The repeatable part matters. A one-time cleanup is useful, but translation issues return as soon as the store changes.
How DSK Translation Check helps
DSK Translation Check scans Shopify translation data and reports missing, blank, copied, and stale values across markets and languages. It is designed for merchants who already use Shopify's native translation setup and want a clear QA layer.
The app is read-only. It does not edit your store, and it does not auto-translate content. It helps you see where the problems are so you can fix them with confidence.
